STAR
Dear Parents and Guardians:

Monte Vista High School has scheduled your student to participate in the 2010 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program. As part of the STAR Program, all Monte Vista students in grades nine through eleven will take the California Standar ds Test (CSTs). These tests measure student mastery of the California educational content standards in English, mathematics, social sciences and science. Monte Vista High School students will take the CSTs April 19, 21, 22 and 26th.&nbs p;The school appreciates your efforts to avoid appointment and scheduling conflicts during these testing days. Please also note that April 20th will NOT be an adjusted Tuesday schedule.

Results from the STAR tests provide parents and school officials with critical information about a student’s academic progress. STAR test results should never be the only source of information used to make major decisions about a student&r squo;s education; however, Monte Vista does refer to STAR test results when designing a student’s academic program. Along with a student’s GPA, the STAR test scores are used to determine eligibility for the MVHS Principal’s Hon or Roll each year.

The Monte Vista High School staff also uses STAR performance data to identify the students’ strengths and areas for improvement. Through an analysis of student performance data by grade level and subject area, the Monte Vista staff will be able to make informed decisions about student placement, curriculum instruction, assessment, and resource allocation.

State officials use STAR test results to monitor a school’s academic progress. Results are used to calculate each school’s Academic Performance Index (API), a major component of the state’s ranking system for schools. Federal o fficials use STAR results to ensure compliance with the requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. The NCLB Act requires all schools to meet specific academic goals.

Monte Vista High School has always scored well on the STAR tests and our staff anticipates that 2010 will be another year of outstanding performance. To help foster success, please have your student take the following steps:
Have them attend school during testing, April 19, 21, 22, 26.
Insure that they get a good night’s sleep before each test.
Remind them to bring their student I.D. card and a #2 pencil to school each day.
Have them eat a healthy breakfast, bring a snack and something to read in case they finish early.
The STAR tests provide important academic information for students, families, and schools; therefore, it is critical that students do their best on the STAR tests.
A detailed testing schedule is posted on the school website.

Very truly yours,
